Blue Mountain Conservation Area

The conservation area on the top of Blue Mountain is 2,500ha of tussock country. Public access is via the Mowbray River that runs between Blue Mountain Station and Meikleburn Station (Walking Access Only).

Blue Mountain Station has a private 4x4 track from our main homestead to the north boundary of the DOC block. This track allows you to drive straight to the top rather than walk the almost 1700 metre climb from the Mowbray River.

The Conservation area is perfect for hunting, photography & tramping. On a clear day, a huge area of the Canterbury Plains can be seen from the top, including Christchurch city and the Port Hills.

Track Warning

This track is only suitable for 4x4, off road vehicles, mountain bikes, horses, motorbikes or quad bikes. Anyone on the track must be very competent and experienced driving farm tracks. The track can be extremely dangerous at different times of the year. There are often rock slips, loose shingle, very steep parts, slippery clay and very uneven surfaces. Some parts have large drop offs into gulleys and sharp corners that are very challenging to get around.

You enter at your own risk. There is no cell phone reception on the track, so everyone must carry an emergency locator beacon when they enter the property.

The track may be closed without warning any day throughout the year. This is usually because of extreme weather events or important days on the farming calendar. Full refunds will be given if the track is closed suddenly.
